The Stage Bus of the Cultural Olympiad in the Central Square in Pyrgos

GETTING TO KNOW THE INDONESIAN CULTURE

A rare and extremely interesting spectacle will be available to those who will be in the Central Square in Pyrgos on the 6th September 2004 at 9.00 p.m. A joyful invasion by a big troupe from Indonesia carried by a whole theatre on wheels.

It is the traveling troupe “Stage Bus” which will be visiting towns in all seven prefectures of the Peloponese, between 25th August and 14th September, performing songs, dances, shadow theatre, video projections, etc.

This colourful tour is brought to us by the Indonesian Embassy in Athens and the Organisation for the Promotion of Greek Culture.

A specially transformed multi-purpose bus, fully equipped for performances (with a theatre stage, video projectors and screens, grand piano, drums, etc.) is taking the 20 Indonesian artists to towns like Nafplion (Platia Kapodistria,) Argos (Aghios Petros Square), Lerna (at Kiveri beach) and to Tripoli, Sparti, Gytheio, Kalamata, Ancient Olympia and other places, to give performances.

Cultural de-centralization

During the press conference at the Amphitheatre of the Ministry of Culture, referring to this art event, the president of OPEP Mr Stamatis Mavros mentioned that it is a production which aims at the de-centralization of cultural events. This offering from Indonesia brings us closer to a unique civilization in a greater area which up to now has been a complete unknown to many of us, a series of events which aim at decentralizing cultural activity, offering the opportunity to people outside the capital to witness the work of the Cultural Olympiad and OPEP.

In Pyrgos, as in other towns, there will be a programme with music, songs, dance, Indonesian shadow theatre and video projections. The show will be performed on the “Stage Bus’, the mobile theatre of the JakArt cultural organization, supported by the Cultural Olympiad. This effort is also supported by the Indonesian Embassy in Greece and the Greek Embassy in Jakarta.

The purpose of this unique trip to culture which is taking place in the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics in Athens 2004, is the deeper understanding among nations and civilizations as it is presented through the diversity and the variety both of the Indonesian culture and of the multicultural-multinational aspect of the means of expression.

The ‘Stage Bus’ was constructed in Holland in 1994 based on the design by visual artist Aart Marcus and the Helsdingen Trio team. Since then, it has traveled and given performances in the whole of Europe, the USA, Australia and, naturally, Indonesia, the latter having also funded the project.

This moving theatre is none other than a 12-metre long vehicle, whose side unfolds and forms a stage on which all the action takes place.

The ‘Stage Bus’ has its own audio systems, lighting systems and musical instruments, the most impressive being a grand piano.
