Instalasi Kali Besar, 5 installations built from wood, plastic bottles and
fabrics floating in the Kali Besar river. Floating
Memories. This work comprises 5 installations built from wood, plastic bottles
and fabrics that were found floating in the Kali Besar river. Wood
is used as a familiar material for the surrounding environment; plastic bottles
(ex- mineral water bottle) are utilized within the construction, with the
additional use of a banner made from fabric as a material on which to paint. The
overall aim of the project is to visualize issues that have developed in
Jakarta, in the concern that they may be ‘forgotten’. To
be better understood by the average person these issues are combined in ‘local
language’. There is a range of issues to be addressed, such as: Historical
Preservation (cultural heritage), Garbage / disposal issues, concerned with
recycling and City aesthetic. Design Concepts: The banner for the painting,
visualises the issues in pictures. Floating the work in Kali Besar creates as a Vocal Point or
Point of Interest, and will attract the interest and attention of the public and
communicate the importance of the issues. Instalasi Kali Besar is part of The

describes the development of Jakarta from the past until now. The third
installation, Skala Manusia (the human scale) Unity of Mankind, symbolizes East
Jakarta (Jakarta Timur). An Installation near the Youth center (Gelanggang olah
raga), in front of the statue. ( Tugu Permuda). Theme : A giant scale monument
that is not humane. The Monument at Senen in front of G.O.R, symbolizes the
Indonesian people in unity, moving forward and fighting for the nation. The
condition today, is retranslating that symbol: the Indonesians are represented
by the youth that has to move forward to face the times. During the JakArt@2003 Festival this monument will
function as a media that’s being modified to form an integral unity within an
installation. The fourth installation, Jakarta Semakin kacau (Jakarta goes

sidewalks. In general, passing along these walkways can be disturbing for
pedestrians because they tend to be designed in such a way as to cast
silhouettes that create an atmosphere of danger. People try to avoid walking in
these spaces. Malu – Malu Mau will become a media interaction between public
and private space that highlights and celebrates their reactive tension: the Harmony Sidewalk will present itself as a ‘sexy
clothes’ on the ‘naked body’ sidewalk. The sidewalk space gives a spirit
and provides a context for this installation. Sidewalks will be partially
covered through the windows of the installation wall. The interest of Malu –
Malu Mau is on the part that is torn, which makes the possibility to double peek
“this time you are being peeked at by the public around you at the same way as
you usually peek at the public”. A unity with the urbanscape without losing

need for open and green space. The reflection of the urban situation and social
from the architecture and installation In
mans’ eye view, it’s like a layered wall but still has a circulation through

Architectural Installation: Jakarta Semakin Kacau – Jakarta goes
Chaotic Symbolizing South
Jakarta (Jakarta Selatan) Location:
Tugu Tani Sculpture also called the ‘struggle for freedom’ statue, (patung
perjuangan) This installation tells story about Jakarta, the metropolis main
city in Indonesia. The partial development without any clear basis in respect of
city rules concepts, results in lot of empty space which is vulnerable to
criminality. The public space is very minimal, and threatens to disappear by
being overwhelmed with commercial buildings. There are still several public
spaces although not well treated. The main point is that even the biggest public
square of Jakarta is now being fenced, the Monas open space for example, is
limited only to specific personnel. The chaos Jakarta - The road is strive on
top and under, widely and lengthen without realize the negative impact from the
space below the fly-over. Unfortunately, the development of the road which is
aesthetically disturbing the “face of the city” isn’t closely related to
the pedestrian. The circulation for human beings is being cut off, up – down,
blocked by plant pots, and other obstructions that leaves no comfortable
pedestrian space in the city. Thus, being formed is the appearance of an exclusive ‘automobile society’. The
impression of this city one of, not being built for human beings, but rather for
machine like vehicles. This condition creates an expanding gap between human and
material values. By way of example, take for instance the conditions for the
handicapped; their mobility is very difficult and imited because city
accessibility is still far from any established standard. Greenlessness of
Jakarta - Throughout the city people are assaulted with tall buildings of
concrete, or faced in glass. The imbalance between built space and open space
makes the climate in the city heavy, coarse and rigid. Jakarta has developed
brutally - The development of the settlement areas which are far from the
Central Business District is a serious concern. Scattered settlement causes the
wasting of energy, time, and natural resources. The effects of pollution are
also extra ordinary. Jakarta is
sick. - The whole shape of phenomenon happening in the urban realm produces
negative effects for the society. Psychologically,
the citizens mental state has became emotional, grumpy, careless, and the risk
of social disintegration is high. From the small samples above it is obvious
that , citizens have no choice except to use private vehicles if they want to
enjoy travel in the city. Citizens
don’t have any choice but to face the daily routines of facing traffic jams,
pollution, noise, heat, overcrowding, criminallity, and demonstrations. Human
being have become stuck in the city space. DESIGN
CONCEPT: The strict broken form creating tight and ineffective space, symbolize
the tight choices for the citizens in Jakarta or the lack of public open space
where people can meet each others and rest. The sharp edges symbolize the
cruelty of Jakarta for many citizens. Meanwhile the long shape with “nearly”
curve symbolize the unlimited time before the city changes into a better place.
On the other hand, the whole shape of design is a transformation design from the
chaos of Jakarta city. The position in Tugu Tani (in front of the sculpture) is
a symbolic of alertness for open public spaces which threatend to be destroyed
and replaced by inappropriate buildings. A002D

Dance Theatre is an avante garde dance group. The group was formed 4 years

of Perahu Pinggiran visually describes bold young teenagers trying to
survive street life by discovering and
exploring an inner freedom in their daily life. They steer a ship through
the conventions of the city, indicating that there is still vibrancy in
life. The movement technique used in this play is not limited by dance
norms , but are basically spontaneous, improvisational movements which are

“Arogan & Halaman” -
by Ferry Dance Teater Ferry
Dance Theater experiments with the ‘realism gesture’. Not to present
the realism concept as an object of imitation, but rather employing it as
an attempt to create a meaningful reality. Ferry Dance Theater has its own
individual characteristic independent of conventional forms. It is our
opinion that interpreting contemporary dance always has to be developed
and be innovative so that the dance itself will never die. In this show,
Ferry Dance Theater will tell of human morality as it affects mankind: asa
cause of war involving the innocent who are trapped between the arrogant
and powerful, who believed the half truths that throws the world into
chaos. There will be 2 scenario. The first one called Arogan. The arrogant
is a faith which is taken as a truth making redundant the need for
consensus and agreement, which results in the destruction of human moral
values and judgment. Supposedly the faith of arrogance is to create a
peaceful world, but in reality it is merely the face of a liar. In this
scenario, Ferry Dance Theater tries to understand and express the problems
in Iraq nowadays. Performed by 5 dancers with their own arrogant character.
The second piece called Halaman (Park). Halaman is a symbol for human
peace and freedom. Halaman tries to bring our childhood memory back, when
we used to play in the park and were united with the environment and gave
us freedom without disturbing others. Ferry Dance Theater tries to bring
the greedy who love power, to their clean playground in the park which is
not disturbed by the rules or legislation created by humans themselves.
These 2 scenarios performed are of 1 hour duration and will describe the
human potential for peace and violence. D006 the05, 19/6 16.00, mil01, 20/6

losing one’s mind, losing everything. “Maria Jaitun”, a suffering
hooker, her body is with disease ….. syphilis…has a heart attack. As a
hooker she is a loser. Nobody wants her. One day “Maria Jaitun” does
not feel afraid anymore, the loneliness and suffering have gone …. After

I’m not afraid of loneliness anymore and suffering has already gone. Dancing, I entered Eden and ate the apples as I pleased.

E001 Homage to the Eternal Creativity of the Human Race (jak/U) In
2003 JakArt will concentrate its efforts in presenting an example, a
taste, of what a project like “Homage to the Eternal Creativity of the
Human Race” might look like. The backbone of this pilot project will be
the history of the Arts in Indonesia. Because of time constrains only a
sample of representative periods will be initially presented. Foreign
embassies and governments will be invited to provide material to
illustrate as a comparison what was happening around the world during the
periods that have been selected. A comprehensive chronological Educational
Exposition of the most important examples of art produced throughout human
history around the world, from the cave dweller to the present, in the
form of museum replicas in an “atmospheric” context. To achieve this
the exposition will draw and use material from both the Tangible Heritage
and Intangible Heritage from around the world. As an Educational project
this exposition is not only meant to provide the opportunity for those who
do not have the privilege to view and be aware of the wealth and diversity
of global art throughout the ages, but also to illustrate the importance
of Creativity in cultural, social and economic development and as a
vehicle supporting and promoting World Peace. It is hoped that this will
inspire and persuade societies (and their governments) to appreciate the
importance of preserving their Cultural Heritage, of presenting and
promoting it at present, and of considering the importance of Creativity
in future development. The
exhibits should be displayed, as far as possible, in layers of
chronological order relating to their time of creation, viewed in parallel
with other examples of art from around the globe dating from the same
period. The exhibits should be viewed in a meaningful “atmospheric”
context that evokes the culture and era within which they were conceived
and created. For example, instead of just displaying paintings and
sculptures of the Baroque era in a “traditional” exhibition format one
could attempt to place them in a “room”, an environment, that would
also include furniture, tapestries, chinaware, architectural details, etc.
all dating from the same Baroque period, and to complete the
“atmospheric” impression one could always add some Baroque music. In fact, because of the exceptional format of this exposition
which is designed around the ‘atmospheric’ concept mentioned above,
the exposition suggests itself to a supplementary and complementary
program that will include a number of other art forms such as theatre,
dance and music that can be used to illustrate the integral relationship
extant between one art form and another.
In this respect an accompanying program of lectures and seminars
could also be linked with the exposition. mus03, 25/6-25/7, 10.00 – 17.00 E002
