The Boogaards family

We ate sugar beets. We made them into treacle in the loft.
We really needed that treacle. But those tulip bulbs.
They were so horribly sweet – and I have a real sweet tooth,
mind you – but they were inedible.

My father said: “they’re nourishing, come on, eat”.
We had nothing else.
