Retrospektif, Painting Exhibition, Sukamto (jak) Born
and raised in Surakarta in 1945, Sukamto is very closely related to Javanese
tradition, rituals and beliefs. This has been the major inspiration in the
creation of his art. Sukamto speaks through his work using satirical overtones
and reflections of everyday life. Known as a painter and draughtsman, his works
are strongly sensitive both in colours
and monotone line. His work moves through naturalistic approaches to abstract
and into decorative. Sukamto dares to play with compositions, resulting in
active, bright, and festive colours. He enjoys working with imagary and graphics.
He would allow free space on his canvas, either plain or coloured, and create
dinamic images. Under the guidance of Fajar Sidik, Handrio, Abbas Alibasyah, Edi
Sunaryo and G. Sidharta, Sukamto started to sharpen his aesthetical skills while
teaching at ASRI Yogyakarta. He recalls his first two years learning at the
Surakarta Art Academy) as “boring”, because they only allowed him to create
sketches and paintings using black and white techniques. It was in his third
year that he was allowed to use three Tempera colours (ocher, black, and white).
In this period Sukamto made good friends with X-Ling who studied at Seniman Muda
Indonesia (Young Indonesian Artists) led by S. Sudjojono; and AS Budiono, former
students at the Akademi Kesenian Surakarta. Upon graduation his V002

Denise Hudon, Hand made paper and colours from plants (jak/ECA) The
re-invention of traditional arts by adapting them to contemporary forms is the
hallmark of Denise Hudon, a French-Canadian artist whose work will be on display
at the Duta Fine Arts Foundation. What gives an individualistic touch to the
pieces is complete reliance on natural materials including handmade paper and
vegetable dyes. She has use cotton rag, recycled cement bags, coffee dregs,
bamboo, leaves and corn to prepare the paper. Born in Montreal in 1950, Hudon
received her education in Fine Arts and began her artistic career by painting
murals on public buildings. Later, she specialised in ceramic sculpture while
continuing her artistic career. All along, she taught painting, ceramics and
fine arts for 15 years. In early 1980s, while in Montreal, Hudon’s work
already featured dried fibres such as bamboo stalks and waste material. It was
in 1993 that Hudon who is often called a “nomad at heart and soul”
integrated hand paper in her work. Following the innovation of a casting concept
for paper, she was chosen by the Ministry of Quebec at the art show “Accent
on Design’ held in New York. She moved to West Africa in 1985. Her 13
years stay there was marked by successful experimentation in the art of
preparing paper with the help of natural tropical fibres. The richness and power
of the African culture became a source of inspiration for her. First in Togo and
then in Ghana, Hudon created paper with recycled fibre and tropical matter
decors. She remained in Mali from 1995 to 1999. At this point in time, the
orientation of her research integrated two techniques. One the transformation of
vegetal dyes (corn leaves, banana trees, leaks, cabbage, wild saffron,
pomegranate, onion, etc) used in the fibre dough. And two, the application of
traditional dyes on paper. The rich texture and quick absorbency of the paper
tempted Hudon to delve into the art and science of paper making. The need also
arose from her inability to find sturdy paper to work on. Most of Hudon’s
research in the field is based on experiments carried out in Nepal, China and
India. From Africa, Hudon moved to Central Asia in 1998 to carry out research on
traditional vegetable dyes used for clothes, block printing and carpets. She
also discovered new fibres that could be used in paper making. Excessive use of
earthen tones and dried leaves go on to re-establish Hudon as an artist who
identifies herself closely with nature. Triangular forms pointing in different
directions can hardly go unnoticed in her work. While some of these forms depict
energy, others symbolise offering of prayers. She is as much a landscape artist
as one bringing out the versatility of human culture and parallel words. Some of
her work feature a little bit of abstract calligraphy too. V004

365,
a one year vsual diary, the works of Deborah J. Nolan (jak/ECA) What
if we pushed ourselves to create, to put pen to paper every single day? What if
we were able to capture the honesty of ongoing process as an artist? How much
time do we really need to commit to art in our daily and busy lives? Project 365
began as a way to explore some of these questions. For every single day of 2002
beginning on January 1st, 2002 until December 31st 2002 I created a piece of
artwork. The artwork was done with a variety of media but always on an A4 size
paper and dated at the bottom right corner. How did I come to decide to make a
goal of art for 365 days? Initially the concept was a challenging personal
project that aimed to pull myself out of procrastination and the ever busyness
of full time work in massive and overwhelming Jakarta. I never had my solitude,
my full weekend to paint uninterrupted and I began to wonder if I would ever
have time again to create. As a painter who works in bursts of energy that often
consume entire weekends I began to wonder if there was actually time every
single day that I had just not seen before. Some of my first notes on the project include the ideas of
exploring a continued pushing of limits I realized that there would have to be
points where a work was unfinished and I did not feel fully satisfied As the
development of making art everyday progressed into the year I learned that there
is a certain intensity that swells over once the art process has started. At
certain points in the early process my daily art became instant moments, and I
had never touched paper with such lack of hesitation and spontaneity before.
Overall my reflections on Project 365, now that it is done, are that it was all
about the honesty of sometimes not having anything to say through art at the
moment we sit down to create . Also as a reflection on the personal side of the
process, it was a progression of trying to dig up real material that means an
excavating of the soul, a digging up and display of the mounds of dirt before
hitting on substance. The final result is still not about a final project of
work but the process of filtering through everything to get there.. I
would like the honesty of the artistic process that Project 365 is attempting to
convey to continue in the display and the exhibition of the work. Project 365
stands on its own as a record of a year in my life, and the pieces are to reveal
to viewers the utterly honest process of an artist day by day over the year
2002. V006

1977 Affandi went to Europe to receive The Dag Hammarskjoeld Fondation

granddaughter, Helfi, who had just married the Belgian diplomat-journalist Dirix
Urbain. Dirix arranged for Affandi to study the techniques of lithography,
ecthing and serigraphy in Belgiaum, and Affandi spent a number of months
studying these techniques and producing a body of works of which little has been
known and none has been sold until recently. This collection includes nearly 100

10 Geometry and Natural lines, Illustrations and Prints by Daniel Dick
(jak) Reflecting
a rich background in life with early experiences abroad and a nomadic lifestyle.
Daniel expresses himself in diverse mediums with bold colours and heavy lines.
His work is an emotional attempt to capture the feelings and concepts of duality
and contrast resulting from his time spent living and traveling in Asia and
Europe. During his time at the University his main interest was in Printmaking
and the constructive process needed to obtain the final work. Upon leaving
school he became intoxicated with colour and paint (** among other things) as a
medium. As well as canvas painting Daniel became involved in mural painting.
Mural painting brought out a passion for the large scale and bold graphic style.
This continues to be one of his foremost interests. His most recent area of
concentration is in illustration as an experiment in colour and pattern. This
form of expression and his use of colour reflect his work in acrylic painting
but also combine a graphic sense that comes from his roots in printmaking. The
detail that he expresses in illustration is a new element in his work. His
latest show expresses a contrast in the two mediums represented, illustration
and printmaking; the bold, simple, monotone prints are an exploration of emotion
and nature and the illustration a study of complex colour, pattern and geometry.
This exhibition is part of a combined exhibition: PHOTOGRAPHS, ILLUSTRATIONS,

The Arts of Japan for Children, Origami Craft and Toys and Plays for
Children. (jak/OCG) The
Arts of Japan for Children is a program organized by the Origami Craft Group.
This is a group of volunteers from Japan loving paper and games. Their program
consist of two parts.: “Origami
Craft”. (The four letters RIGA in the middle of ORIGAMI form the two Chinese
characters which are called ORI and GAMI in Japanese. ORI means "to fold,"
and is composed of the characters for hand and ax. GAMI means "paper,"
and is composed of the characters for silk and family) and Toys and plays for
children” Have you ever tried
these traditional Japanese toys?: Ohajiki
(Marbles) Ohajiki is basically a plaything for little girls. In the past, they
used roll shells and pebbles, but now they use variously colored ceramic,
glass or plastic ohajiki. These are scattered on the floor, and, after dividing
them by finger, the ones you aim at and hit are yours. The person who takes the
most, wins. The name ohajiki came from playing by snapping or flicking(hajiku)
with the fingers. Otedama (Beanbags) Otedama is a small bag made of cloth and
filled with small beans, pebbles, rice and the like, used in
a game for young girls. It comes as a set of either five, seven, or nine
beanbags, one of which, larger and conspicuously colored different from the
others, is the chief bag(oyadama). One plays by tossing up a bag, then singing
and manipulating one or more bags on the ground in a certain way while the
tossed bag is in midair, or by juggling them. Kendama (Cup and ball) Kendama is
a wooden toy consisting of a wooden stick with one end sharpened, the other end
shaped like a dish, and a ball with a hole in it connected to the stick by
string. The object is to balance the ball on the dish part and to stick it on
the sharp end of the stick. There is a similar game in Europe, as well, but
there are even kendama championships held in Japan. Since the Taisho Period(1912-1926)
the shaft has been cross-shaped and has three dish parts in total. The event
starts at 10.00 and ends at 16.00 hrs with a solo performance of Adam Baldych, a
16 year old jazz violinist from Poland. So why don’t you come and join us? The
Origami Craft Group is looking forward to play with you and your kids. V011

Paintings by Angels, Picture Agates of Indonesia -
exhibition (DMG/Sae) Quartz
(including the cryptocrystalline subgroup, also known as agate) is the most
common of stones – it probably is found in every nation of the world. Agates
are found in all parts of Indonesia as well, but some of them are very special.
Some of them have a beautiful mix of colors and can resemble striking abstract
paintings. A very view, mostly from West Java, contain beautiful scenes and
landscapes that are truly like paintings, with magnificent “skies”,
enchanting “lakes” as well as “seashores” and “riverbanks”.There are
even “fish”, other animals and the occasionally human like shapes. Those
with easy-to-see scenes are truly collectors’ items, the value of which
depends on their beauty and clarity. Another unique type of the agate, carved
from the part of the rock next to the skin of the boulder, shows numbers or
letters, and another rare type (usually clear agates with white or brown
inclusions) very, very occasionally spell out the Arabic words “Allah” or
“Muhammad” We have given the name “Jurassic Park Agates” to yet another
extraordinary type of agate found in Indonesia. These stones were somehow formed
deep in the earth millions of years ago in an area where there was much water.
Amazing as it may seem the molten agate material surrounded and enclosed some of
this water which against al logic did not evaporate. V014

Pameran Tungal, exhibition by FX Harsono
(jak) The
beginning of the fifties witnessed the development of art that was highlighted
by the establishment of institutions for formal art education. Thus came into
being a new era in modern Indonesian art: academization of art. Academization of
art in that period manifested in Seni Rupa Bandung (or Bandung School - now
Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain, Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Teknologi
Bandung, ITB), founded in 1947. and Seni Rupa Yogya ( now: Fakultas Seni Rupa
dan Desain, Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Seni Indonesia - ISI, Indonesian
Institute of Art), established in 1950. In the beginning stages of this
academization of art there arose debates on issues of Indonesian identity in
art, and on art in general. An accusation toward Bandung Art that its art was a
Western laboratorium, i.e. art with Western characteristics, that was launched
by Yogya Art who felt more deeply rooted in Indonesia, went on for about ten
years as an interesting polemic. On the positive account, both sides gave
arguments and evidence (in art creations) that in later days could be seen as
creative forward leaps in the history of modern Indonesian art development.
Bandung Art pioneered in abstract art creations, while Yogya Art oriented toward
representational art. Indonesian artists representative of developments of that
period included A. Sadali, Srihadi Soedarsono, But Muchtar, Mochtar Apin, Popo
Iskandar, all from Bandung; and Affandi, Sudjojono, Hendra Gunawan, Widayat,
Fajar Sidik and Edi Sunarso from Yogyakarta. Another milestone in the dynamic
modern Indonesian art development occured in the seventies when two trends came
to surface. First, the trend to explore traditional and primitive art of the
Indonesian archipelago, undertaken by modern artists. And another, the trend to
diffuse differences between the Bandung and Yogya group, in the form of joint
activities by young Bandung and Yogya artists under the name of New Art Group (Kelompok
Seni Rupa Baru). This period was later viewed as the decade in which Indonesian
artists became conscious of the importance and the gravity of the need for an
Indonesian art identity, to show difference from Western art identity that was
dominant then. On the other hand, the new art movement appeared as a push to put
importance in the need for progressive development in Indonesian art, to
anticipate developments and challenges in many fields - politics, economics,
social, culture, science- and technology - facing the Indonesian people.
Diversity in creations increased, and artists' visions expanded, as consequence
of expression forms offered by the New Art Group. Their approach toward art
creation tended to diffuse and combine art desciplines - painting, sculpture,
graphics, ceramics - into one creation. In this period appeared F.X. Harsono. FX
Harsono is an art activist. Born in 1948 in Blitar, Java,
He Graduated from the Advanced School of Indonesia Arts (ASRI). where he
had his first solo exhibition, “The Social Change”. He believes that a work
of art should express social problems, and frequently addresses in his
installation works the urban and environmental issues important in Indonesia
today. V023

The Exuberance of the Soul, exhibition by Aida Prayogo and Lamat
(jak) Painter
Aida Prayogo was born in Sawahlunto on the 17th of September 1957. She earned
her degrees from the Mc Ateer High School in San Fransisco, the Belair Beauty
College in Houston Texas, the academy for Foreign Languages in Bandung and at
the Academy for Secretary and management (ASMI) Jakarta. In her drawings and
paintings, life is shown as a
struggle of movement. Her work is wild but directed. The lines and shapes on
canvas embody a struggle, and the circles are spiritual symbols. Human life is
full of unexpected emotions and continuous movement; full of anxieties and
jealousies, and faith in God the Creator of the Universe. Everything can
be expressed in a context of freedom of emotion within the movement. All kinds
of elements are taken from objects around us, like stones, coins, ropes, sands,
metals and oil paints. All of which
express the treasures of nature given to human beings; express and becoming a
concept on canvas. In striking or
expressing the concept of the work on canvas the artist wishes to let go of all
rules, making the movement of emotional freedom
that embodies beauty without limits. In painting, she uses a variety media, oil
paint, water colours, acrylics and painting on ceramics. For 2 years her journey
through the processes of painting, has until now developed
from the expressionist approach, wherein emerges a desire to freely
express emotionally that which has been buried to a more abstract approach.
Guided by the artist Porboenuadi (Pungki) in exposing and expressing secret
thoughts, and recently began experimenting with different media; in abstract
painting the artist has found a surprising freedom. She has already exhibited
solo and in groups in Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Rome - Italy, Athens -
Greece, and The Hague – Holland. V027

Riduan Tomkins, Exhibition of Recent Works. (EDFAITC) “Tomkins’
pigment discovers and occludes, reveals and withholds. And his innate elegance
is a cross he must bear. You must be patient with it, long enough to get burnt
by the blaze of his invention, by the annealing, cleansing quality of Tomkins’
endlessly clarifying vision,” writes critic G. M. Dault. Riduan is an
internationally acclaimed artist. His work is included in prestigious public and
private collections all over the world. As the title clearly expresses, the
latest Riduan Tomkins paintings and works on paper, were all painted in
Indonesia.
Born
1941 Weymouth, Dorset, England, Riduan Tomkins came to Canada in the early
eighties, and has once again returned to Canada after a nearly ten year sojourn
as senior Lecturer in Painting at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He
has exhibited and participated in many of group exhibitions as well as solo
exhibitions around the globe, including such notable galleries such as the
Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, Betty Parsons Gallery in New York and Gallery
one in Toronto. He has participated in many exhibitions, group and solo, across
North and South America, throughout Europe and New Zealand. Tomkin's work
reflects the minimalists desire for an extreme simplicity, claarity or order, to
suffice for universe. The two dimensionality of the canvas support is asserted
in the paintings, by the use of flat, finely counter-balanced primary colours.
There are frequently composed or juxtaposed in geometrical shapes that often
suggest a sense of recession, or strong simple vertical, horizontal or
diagonal contours define the colour-fields that also create the sense of a self
contained universe. V029
