Soesja Citroen and her piano trio featuring Berend van de Berg,
Ruud Ouwehand and Joost Kesselaar. (jak/ENL/EH) Soesja
Citroen, vocalist, Featuring: Berend van de Berg, piano, Ruud
Ouwehand, bass, Joost Kesselaar, drums. Soesja
Citroen started her career in 1979. She soon became very well known in
Dutch jazzclubs and theaters . She performed at the North Sea Jazz
Festival, 1981, for the first time. She did radioshows with the Metropole
Orchestra and won second prize at the Knokke Songfestival. She has
recorded many albums. In 1980 “To Build” featuring Willem Breuker,
1981 “Good enough for Jazz” with Nico Bunink and 1982 “Key Largo”
with Cees Slinger and Buck Hill. In 1983 “Soesja Citroen sings
Thelonious Monk” was released. In 1985 “Angel Eyes” with the
Metropole Orchestra conducted by Rogier van Otterloo. “Soesja sings Fred
Astaire” (1987) “along with Soesja in Silk” (1989), a beautiful
ballad-cd conducted by Robert Farnon, and the band-album “Shall we Dance”.
In 1986 playing at the Yatra Jazz Festival in New Delhi and Bombay
was one of the special highlights in Soesja's career. In 1993 she
performed in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. On “Soesja Citroen
Band Live” (1991) Soesja proves that she's not only a great singer of
ballads but also a wild woman on stage 'when the spirit moves her'. In
1994 “Here and Now” was released followed by a tv-show in Ljubljana.
In 1996 Soesja performed successfully again at the North Sea Jazz Festival
and produced the CD “Songs for Lovers and Losers” featuring Louis van
Dijk and Hein Van de Geyn. The German jazz-magazine JazzPodium called
Soesja an European Top Jazz-singer and the American jazz-magazine, Jazz
Times, called her absolutely sensational.
In 1997 “Yesterdays” was released, a compilation of her three
albums with the Metropole Orchestra. And finally in 1998 Soesja recorded
the cd “Song for Ma”, an autobiographical cd featuring Michael Moore
on clarinet. In 1999 the Canadian jazz-magazine CADENCE called the cd
superb and wrote that Citroen deserves recognition as a composer, and Jazz
Times wrote: “Dutch vocalist and songwriter Citroen shows herself a
formidable composer”. M002

Fusion Night with Co-P (jak), Fusion Jazz from Indonesia Featuring:
Dimas A. Soeryoputro, Pemimpin dan Pemain Gitar Nilon Akustik, Barry
Likumahuwa, Bass, Doni Y. Joesran, Keyboard, Andre Dinuth, Gitar Listrik,
Tri Alexander, Vokalis, Mery Kasiman, Keyboard.
“co-P” (read : Kopi), derived from the word “contemporary-Parts”;
music that give listeners the taste of contemporary jazz, easy
for listening and not too complicated.
There are elements of pop, classical and rock music inserted in
their music. It started in year 2000 when Dimas, leader of a fusion-jazz
group, met a friend guitarist whom together performed at the regular
Monday Jazz Gig at Pasar Festival. During
that time, the jazz scene was still in the doldrums and more so
represented by the older and senior musicians who are perceived to be
serious and more mainstream. It was then also exhilarating to find these two young jazz
musicians representing a genre that is not traditionally related to youth.
They noticed by Ireng Maulana, the Senior Jazz Musician who
initiated this Monday event and he motivated them to form a
more serious Jazz Group. In
early 2001 Dimas formed “co-P”, a group which represents young people
who are professional and skilled. This group focused on Contemporary Jazz
music. Their debut album called “Blue Lines” is comprised of 10 songs.
9 songs were composed by Dimas and one by Glenn Dauna.
The music is arranged by “co-P” , and all the songs are in
English. The music refers to the international music appetite and
atmosphere. The album veers into easy listening, and streams in the mode
of Fourplay and
Al Jarreau, the media quoted. “co-P”
has recently finalized music for their second album which will soon be
released, inspired by a nu-jazz atmosphere. “co-P” group main aim is
to support Jazz locally,
so that everyone: young and old can enjoy and understand Jazz
Music, and at same time they intend to go international through World
Class Jazz festivals and Contests. M023

“Demi Cinta SMESTA”, neo progressive Rock (jak) Smesta
(it is not “semesta”) became active as a band in 1996 but adopted
their present identity in 1997. With their natural capability they built
the band as a combination between protons and neutrons to become an Atom.
Music is ‘ungkapan’, meaning ‘honesty’.
Without intelligence it is hardly possible to make “unkapan “
and for “Smesta“ music is totally about honesty. An Aesthetic can
never exist when feeling is ignored in a production.
Smesta’s music is clearly Rock, but sometimes includes Heavy
Metal and slow music. They can change the measure easily in one number,
measure can be from 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 until 9/8. Their overall sound
is a mixture between modern and vintage, occasionally using ethnic sounds.
They use nuansa sapacy, control chord, inverse, sincope, ritme baet non
mainstream. One song consists of many parts. In every performance Smesta
always presents their theatrical concept. They have produced and released
two indy albums for the market which were well received judging from the
high sales figures. They have participated in several events : 1997 :
Forum Komunikasi Music Indonesia, 1998 : Reforms stage in Tim, celebration
of May 12 tragedy in Trisakti, 2000 : Recording, 2001 : Press Conference

“Today for Tomorrow”, Nial Djuliarso Trio with special Guest: Adam
Baldych (jak) Born
in Jakarta, Indonesia on February 5, 1981, Nial began playing the piano at
the age of three. He graduated from high school in Chattanooga, TN, USA in
1999 and enrolled at Berklee College of Music in the fall of that year,
where he was awarded a full-scholarship. Nial was the winner of the 2001
and 2002 Hilton Head Jazz Society Scholarship competition in South
Carolina, USA. As is the case with every yearly summer break in college
this year the young Djuliarso made plans to visit Indonesia, amongst
others, and on its way to his hometown Jakarta, he will pass thru Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia and Singapore, where a series of performances and
workshops/clinics have been set up in collaboration with local jazz
musicians, and music dept’s of universities. He plans to arrive in
Jakarta on June 23rd and plans to leave Indonesia on July 23rd. During
this period, he will take part in several musical performances, conduct
interviews (for radio, press and TV) in the following cities, Jakarta,
Bandung, Jogya, Denpasar (Bali). “The jazz bug hit me that night!!”
… said the young Nial Djuliarso, after experiencing the Pat Metheny
Group live in concert in Jakarta in 1996. This should be the turning point
in his life, afterwhich he was unwaveringly focused to become a jazz
professional. Student pianist Nial Djuliarso cites jazz greats Red Garland,
Wynton Kelly, and Oscar Peterson as his primary influences. This is his
fourth year majoring in piano performance under the auspices of professors
that include Joanne Brackeen, Hal Crook, and Danilo Perez. He has also
played and studied with Mark Levine, Bobby Watson, Phil Wilson, Jerry
Bergonzi, Christian McBride, and Joe Lovano. In 2000 at the Sarasota Jazz
Festival in Florida, he has performed with Marian McPartland (piano duet).
In the summer of 2002 he spent two months playing at the famous Grand
Hotel on Mackinac Island, MI. He played at Carnegie Hall in NYC with his
trio as part of the week-long Carnegie Hall Workshop for Small Jazz
Ensemble. Six Groups were selected to take part in this workshop. The Nial
Djuliarso Trio also played at the 2002 North Sea Jazz Festival, in the
Hague, Holland. Nial plans to move to NYC – the ultimate city for
fledgling jazz musicians, it’s either “live or die”, the cruel city
of musical opportunities -- to go to graduate school when he finishes his
studies at Berklee in May 2004. M025

Improvisation. Bathtub Music. As a soloist I relate to the tradition in
the dynamic field between Composition and Improvisation. The sole
tradition in which I have any chance at all of coming close to genuinely
understanding is the one into which I was born. I enjoy opening myself to
external inflnces, however, and in this way incorporate foreign elements
into my art. But my ancestors were neither cotton-pickers in the Southern
States nor Siberian shamans; I can therefore only be an observer of such
traditions. My principal instrument, the trombone, possesses a
classic-romantic repertoire which one can hardly take seriously. This is
an advantage, for I experience no training-conditioned trepidation as I
stand before masterworks dedicated to it. Thus in concert performance I
can let works with which I am involved – improvisatorily and enriched
with my own material – march past me with no impediment. M028
