The former Hurricane Isidore, which is currently
hovering around the
northern
Yucatan Peninsula, has been downgraded
to a tropical storm this morning,
but it is
expected to strengthen
to hurricane status again over the next 24 hours.
This is
a
slow-moving storm, and at this point it is rather uncertain where it
will
finally end
up. Computer models from the National
Hurricane Center in Miami, however,
show a
probable movement
northwards over the next few days.
Now is the time you should begin
to plan what you will do if it becomes
necessary to
evacuate.
You DON'T need to panic; you DO need to stay informed.
Please
drop by the
OISS to pick up a "Hurricane Evacuation
Information" sheet. The National
Hurricane
Center offers a
good website for tracking storms at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
--
but
remember, the computer models become less accurate the more they
reach into
the future,
so it is necessary to recheck the site with
some frequency. Please let us
know if you
have
questions.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami continues to
project that
tropical storm Isidore will
be heading toward us and
that landfall will occur sometime Thursday
morning. The good
news
is that the storm has weakened considerably during the time it was
over
land in Mexico. It is
expected to regain hurricane
status, but it is not expected to regain its
former
force.
Hurricanes are rated from 1 to 5, with 5 being the strongest
in magnitude
and wind force and 1
being the weakest. At this
time Isidore is expected to fall toward the
weaker end of this
scale,
which means New Orleans may not be ordered to evacuate.
Flooding and power
outages could
still be a problem, however.
You should make sure that you have a
flashlight and batteries
and
food to last a few days. (Remember that you need a can opener
to open cans
and that you can't cook
if there is no electrical
power.) Don't wait until the last minute to go
shopping --you'll
find long
lines and empty shelves.
The most important thing for
now is to stay informed. You can call
280-6000 to find out if
and
when the university will close. The scrolling bar on the
front page of the
UNO web site will announce
any decision to close
the University. Please note that "closing the
university" and
"evacuating the
university" are two different decisions. The
university would probably not
order an evacuation unless
the
hurricane is on the stronger end of the scale -- a "4" or "5" or a
slow
moving "3".
Please come by the OISS to pick up hurricane
information sheet that will
give you more ideas for
hurricane
preparation.
